/// About

Sadness ≠ madness.
But one can become the other.

The title comes from a Cioran aphorism I've carried around for years: the observation that sadness is a finite state — it has an object, a cause, an exit — while madness is the structural condition that remains when sadness runs out of things to be sad about and keeps going anyway.

The track is about that transition. The first three minutes are sadness: a recognizable shape, melody, something you could almost hum. Then the structure breaks. The sub-bass stays but loses its context. What remains is not emotion but the vibration where emotion used to be.

It's not a sad track. Sad tracks are cathartic — they let you feel something and then let you move on. This one doesn't let you move on. That's the point of the title.

/// Process

How it came together

Starting point

A Cioran fragment about the difference between sadness and madness. I wrote the title first, then spent three months finding what it sounded like.

Core sound

A 55Hz sub-bass tuned to the frequency the body recognizes before the ear does. Everything else in the track is built around preserving that note's gravity.

Duration

6 minutes 14 seconds. Longer than most singles. The track needs its time — the sadness becomes madness only if you stay with it long enough.

The ending

An unresolved reverb tail that fades over 40 seconds. It refuses to stop cleanly. That refusal is the point.

"The track was not finished. It was simply no longer getting worse. That's how I know something is done."
